Sustainable business practice for IT projects.
Venue: QA, Capitol House, Bond Court, Russell Street, Leeds, LS1 5SP
Speaker: Peter Nesbitt and Mark O'Neill
Most organisations face the challenge of providing high quality yet cost-effective services, against a background of economic downturn in the form of a global recession. Energy costs remain volatile, coupled with an increasing recognition of their social responsibility of protecting our environment against the effects of global warming in the form of reducing their carbon footprint. The project management profession is not exempt; Peter and Mark recommend that APM members take an active part in this ethically and financially responsible movement, wherein organisations are facing a ‘perfect storm’, with the forces of legislation, ecology, economics and publicity colliding. A Health Safety & Environmental Plan as part of the PMP is simply no longer enough. With the IT profession responsible for the same amount of CO2 emissions as the airline industry, it is only a matter of time before IT projects are forced to consider the green implications of their chosen solution. Peter and Mark feel it is essential therefore that the PM profession takes an active stance on this issue, taking the lead to introduce new measures to assist in the halt of global warming through responsible and professional IT Project Management. Organisations are therefore increasingly looking towards their Information Technology or Information System groups to lead the way and assist the organisation in becoming more ecologically friendly.– it’s all too easy to see Green IT as being just about the environment but that’s just one aspect. Organisations need to also significantly reduce their running costs, be ready to meet carbon emission and energy reduction targets and fend off the bad publicity and shareholder backlash that can come from not being environmentally responsible. As the author of the world’s first certificate in Green IT, Mark is ideally placed to show APM members a way forward - ethical responsibility in a world of increasing green pressures. Mark O Neill, Senior Manager – Professional Best Practice Senior Principal Lecturer/Consultant – Service Management. Appointed to the itSMF 2020 Visioning Board which has responsibility for identifying a strategy for the long term future of Service Management.
