JCI Leeds (Junior Chamber International)
About Us
Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a worldwide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs with over 250,000 active members in over 100 countries. JCI provides young people with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change. Past members of JCI include Kofi Annan, Bill Clinton and Bill Gates.
JCI Leeds was established in 1956 and is one of the largest Junior Chambers in the UK. People from all walks of life join JCI to learn, grow and lead projects in areas of business, community, international, individual personal development and social.
Past Presidents of JCI Leeds include: John Jackson CBE, Richard Jackson MBE, Sally-Anne Greenfield and Adam Woodhall.
Business
JCI Leeds works with members and supporters to host a programme of business events, an excellent way of getting involved with the commercial side of life in Leeds.
We run regular business events to give you the opportunity to present your organisation to a wide range of businesses and exchange contact details with potential clients and suppliers. These events will help to develop your confidence, communication and networking skills and we will help you to actively promote your business within our networks.
We also host the JCI Leeds Annual Business Lecture, which is a fantastic opportunity to listen and learn from some truly inspirational business speakers.
Community
JCI Leeds is passionate about putting something back into the communities in which we live and work. It can be easy to forget that even in a thriving city like Leeds, there are many people less fortunate than ourselves.
We recognise the importance of young people being active citizens and encourage members to take time to get involved in the community. Each year JCI Leeds runs a number of community projects and we are always looking for volunteers to join projects teams, creating opportunities to get involved with practical and fund raising activities on a local, national and international level:
JCI Leeds supports a number of local charities and each year we choose a local charity to support.
On a national level we also support JCI UK by working with The Prince's Trust and the UN Global Compact and will be keeping members informed about upcoming activities and events.
Junior Chamber International as a worldwide organisation has pledged its support for the Nothing But Nets, a charity that helps to fight Malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa, and JCI Leeds is an active supporter of this campaign.
International
JCI Leeds offers members the opportunity to travel to new and exciting places and to network with fellow members all over the world. Members benefit from training and personal development opportunities at national, regional and international events, including European and World Conferences. Bursaries are available to supplement the costs to help members to attend events outside of Leeds.
These events are really fun too, offering plenty of occasions to socialise at events ranging from black tie dinners to pub quizzes…there is something for everyone!
JCI Leeds is twinned with JCI Dublin, JCI Glasgow, JCI Dortmund and JCI St Louis and we have reciprocal invitations to attend events each others events and integrate wherever possible.
Bursaries are available to supplement the costs to help members to attend events outside of Leeds and we often makes special arrangements to get members discounted travel and accommodation rates.
Individual Personal Development
JCI Leeds exists to support the development of its members. Members can attend our regular training sessions to gain a range of skills such as networking, public speaking, leadership and confidence building.
Our trainers have a wealth of experience and it's our members who drive the topics we train, so if there is something that would help you to build your skills and confidence then we will look to include it in our programme.
Debating, Extempore and Public Speaking
JCI Leeds has a proud tradition of taking part in debating, extempore and public speaking competitions at regional, national and international level and with some considerable success!
In 2008 members of JCI Leeds won the national extempore and public speaking competitions and were on the team that won the international debating competition at World Congress in New Delhi. This year's President Anil Champaneri also captained the team that won the National Debating Competition at the JCI UK National Conference in London last year.
We encourage our members to attend training sessions aimed at providing the skills and the confidence to take part in these competitions.
Social
One of the reasons people join JCI is to get out there and meet new people, so we run regular social events to enable you to meet other members, network and enjoy some amazing offers. Both members and non-members are welcome to attend.
The highlight of our social calender is the JCI Leeds Annual Dinner and each year we host this on a theme. In previous years we've turned 'Japanese' in celebration of the World Conference in Osaka, Japan, as well as hosted a Oscar-style party. Our dinners always promise to be a fabulous evenings and a great opportunity to celebrate our successes.
